Live Betting

The best online sportsbooks cover a huge variety of sports, leagues and games in-play. That allows you to watch a game and place bets while it is unfolding in real time. Most online sports betting sites offer live wagering, but only the best online sports gambling sites offer a wealth of live props, live streaming, stats, infographics and a user-friendly live betting interface. This is one of the best features online sports betting sites can offer. It is expensive to secure the broadcasting rights for live streaming, so only the best online sports betting sites provide this feature. BetMGM stands out by offering live streams of NBA and NHL games, along with sports such as soccer, tennis and smaller sports like snooker.

Mobile App

The best sports betting sites are fast, reliable and user-friendly, allowing you to place bets quickly while you are on the move. They make the mobile wagering process simple and convenient, ensuring you never miss the opportunity to place a wager. FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars and BetMGM have very high average user ratings on the App Store and Google Play.

Legally Betting On Sports In The U.S.

Nevada was the only state with a legal sports betting industry before the Supreme Court overturned PASPA in 2018. That opened the door for each state to legalize sports betting on an individual basis. More than 30 states have since taken advantage of that opportunity, along with the District of Columbia.

Some states, including Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Rhode Island are controlled by lottery-run monopolies. Online sports wagering most recently launched in Ohio and Maryland.

Right now, these are the states with open and competitive markets for the top online betting sites:

AZ Betting Sites

Arizona ushered in its legal sports wagering industry last year. The state created 20 master licenses, which were issued to professional sports venues and tribes. Arizona sportsbooks were then required to tie up deals with those master licensees to launch in the state.

Caesars signed up with Arizona Diamondbacks, FanDuel teamed up with the Phoenix Suns and BetMGM agreed its deal with the Arizona Cardinals. DraftKings partnered with TPC Scottsdale, a PGA Tour venue, while WynnBET is with the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Bally Bet, Barstool, Betfred, BetRivers, Betway, Desert Diamond, Fubo, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock, SaharaBets, SuperBook and TwinSpires are also legal sportsbooks in Arizona.

CO Betting Sites

Colorado's sports betting industry began during the lockdowns of 2020, when all the professional leagues were on pause. However, things soon picked up, and Colorado now has the most competitive market in the country, with more online sports betting sites than any other state.

BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings and WynnBET are some of the Colorado sportsbooks available in the state, but they face immense competition. Bally Bet, Barstool, Betfred, BetMonarch, BetRivers, Betsafe, Betway, BetWildWood, Circa Sports, Elite, FOX Bet, MaximBet, PlayMaverick, PlayUp, PointsBet, SBK, Sky Ute, SuperBook, theScore, Tipico and TwinSpires are all available, and bet365 is expected to launch soon.

CT Betting Sites

Connecticut online betting sites went live in the fall of 2021. The state only created three master licenses, which were awarded to the Connecticut Lottery and the tribal owners of Foxwoods Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino. The Lottery selected PlaySugarHouse – which is owned by Rush Street Interactive – as its partner.

Foxwoods went with DraftKings and the Mohegan Tribal Nation chose FanDuel. DraftKings also runs an online casino in Connecticut and FanDuel powers the Mohegan Sun online casino. All professional sports betting is permitted. You can bet on college teams based outside the state, but there are severe restrictions on the wagers you can place on in-state teams like UConn.

IA Betting Sites

Online sports betting began in Iowa back in 2019. The Hawkeye State initially required bettors to register in-person at a retail sportsbook owned by their chosen online sports betting site. That mandate gave William Hill an advantage due to the size of its Iowa retail estate.

Caesars took over the William Hill brand last year and rebranded it as Caesars Sportsbook. The need for in-person registration ended in January 2021, giving rival online betting sites a chance to catch it up, but Caesars still leads the way. Its competitors are BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, Bally Bet, Barstool, Betfred, BetRivers, Betway, Circa, DRF, Elite, FanDuel, Fubo, Hard Rock, PointsBet, Q Sportsbook, theScore and Unibet.

IL Betting Sites

Illinois welcomed its first online sports betting sites in June 2020, a year after Gov. J. B. Pritzker signed the bill into law. It had an in-person registration requirement for the first couple of years, but that came to an end in March 2022. That encouraged BetMGM to launch in Illinois, while Caesars also relaunched its sports betting site in the state.

There are now seven Illinois sportsbooks: Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet. That is a smaller selection of online betting sites than you will find elsewhere, but Illinois is already the fourth largest state for sports wagering, behind only New York, New Jersey and Nevada.

IN Betting Sites

The Hoosier State has a competitive online sports betting industry with a reasonable 9.5% revenue tax rate. That has encouraged a variety of top US betting sites to launch in Indiana, including BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, WynnBET Bally Bet, Barstool, Betway, PointsBet, theScore, TwinSpires and Unibet. Expect more Indiana betting sites to launch as time goes on.

There are no notable restrictions on Indiana online sports betting. You can wager on professional and college sports, provided you are aged 21 or older and physically located in the state. It is one of the top 10 states for sports betting by handle and revenue.

Kansas Betting Sites

With the launch of Kansas sports betting sites, the best Kansas sportsbooks have risen to the forefront. Operators in Kansas include a variety of players, including DraftKings Kansas, FanDuel Kansas, and BetMGM Kansas.

LA Betting Sites

Louisiana joined the legal online sports betting party in January 2022. Retail sportsbooks opened their doors toward the end of 2021, but their online counterparts launched in time for the closing stages of the NFL playoffs.

There are 64 parishes in Louisiana, and 56 of them voted in favor of legalizing sports betting. You must be in one of those 56 parishes to place legal sports wagers. BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, WynnBET, BetRivers and Barstool are the legal US betting sites in the state if Louisiana.

MI Betting Sites

Sports betting websites made their debut in Michigan in 2021, a year after the first retail sportsbooks opened. It quickly became one of the largest states for sports betting, surpassed only by New York, New Jersey, Nevada, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, WynnBET, Barstool, BetRivers, FireKeepers, Four Winds, FOX Bet, Golden Nugget, Gun Lake, PointsBet and TwinSpires are the legal online sports betting sites in Michigan. It also permits online casino gaming, poker rooms and racebooks.

NJ Betting Sites

New Jersey was the driving force behind the decision to overturn the federal sports wagering ban in 2018. It battled the sports leagues for several years in a bid to see PASPA struck down, and it finally succeeded in May 2018. The Garden State was the first to roll out legal online sports wagering, and it had the largest industry in the country until New York launched in January 2022.

There are more sportsbooks in New Jersey than any other state apart from Colorado. FanDuel is the market leader, ahead of DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars. Additional US sports betting site options in the Garden State include Barstool, bet365, Betway, Borgata, FOX Bet, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock, PlayUp, PointsBet, Resorts, SugarHouse, SuperBook, theScore, Tipico, TwinSpires, Unibet, VIE and WynnBET. New Jersey also permits online casinos and poker.

NY Betting Sites

New York became the largest state to legalize online sports betting when it took the plunge in January 2022. Retail sports wagering had been available for a few years prior to that, but it was confined to a handful of upstate casinos. It swiftly overtook New Jersey as the largest state for sports betting in January, and NY sportsbooks handled around $5 billion in the first two months of trading.

Only nine online sportsbooks were permitted to launch. FanDuel is the top online sportsbook by revenue, ahead of DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, BetRivers, PointsBet, WynnBET and Resorts. The final licensed site, Bally Bet, is still pending launch.

OH Betting Sites

Online sports betting launched in Ohio on January 1, 2023. The best Ohio sportsbooks each have their own Ohio sports betting promos

The top Ohio betting apps and their welcome promos include:

PA Betting Sites

Pennsylvania was one of the first states to legalize sports betting. Retail venues opened in 2018, but it took almost a year for online betting sites to follow suit. There was controversy around the decision to charge a $10 million licensing fee and a 36.5% revenue tax, although that has since been eclipsed by New York's $25 million fee and 51% tax rate. Pennsylvania also allows sportsbooks to deduct promotional spend before paying the tax, whereas New York does not.

FanDuel, BetMGM and DraftKings are the best sports betting sites in Pennsylvania. There is a Caesars Sportsbook, but it is a legacy brand from the pre-William Hill takeover days, and it is not as impressive. Alternative options include FOX Bet, Unibet, Parx and Barstool, while online casinos are also legal.

TN Betting Sites

Tennessee is one of the few states that does not require online sportsbooks to agree market access deals with land-based casinos. That is simply because there are none in Tennessee, so a sports betting site is awarded a standalone license.

The options in Tennessee are BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and WynnBET, plus Barstool, TwinSpires, Wagr and Action 24/7. There is a controversial stipulation in Tennessee that requires sports betting sites to hold 10% of the wagers they handle as revenue. It is designed to boost taxes, but it could lead to them offering poor odds, although sites can circumvent the requirement by paying a fine.

VA Betting Sites

Virginia's first online sports betting site opened for business in January 2021. FanDuel tied up a deal with Washington Football Team to steal a march on its rivals, but Bally Bet, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock, PointsBet, Unibet and WynnBET have now arrived to offer competition.

In the industry's first 13 months, Virginia online sportsbooks handled $4.1 billion worth of wagers and earned revenue of $352.4 million. Betway and SI Sportsbook are expected to launch in Virginia soon. Wagering on in-state college teams is not permitted in Virginia.

WV Betting Sites

West Virginia has six online sportsbooks: BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, PointsBet and Betly. It is one of just five states to permit online casino gaming, along with Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Online poker rooms are also legal, but the small population size has thus far deterred companies from launching them.

WY Betting Sites

The state with the smallest population launched legal online sports betting in 2021. There are just three online betting sites in Wyoming, but they happen to be among the best online sportsbooks in the country: BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel. The state only charges $100,000 for a five-year license, and the revenue tax rate is set at 10%. The minimum age to bet at legal sportsbooks in Wyoming is 18, whereas it is 21 in the rest of the country.

Most sports betting sites cover football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, MMA, boxing, soccer and motorsports. NCAA College Sports Betting Sites

The college sports betting rules change on a state-by-state basis. New Jersey and Virginia do not permit betting on college teams based in the state. You can bet on in-state college teams in Illinois, but only at retail sportsbooks. Lots of states forbid prop bets on college football and basketball games too.

Sports Betting Site Odds and Lines

Moneyline

A moneyline bet is a straightforward wager on the team you expect to win a game. For example, the sportsbooks might offer moneyline odds of +135 on the Arizona Diamondback to beat the Houston Astros and -160 on the Astros to win the game. The odds tell you the potential profit available and the implied probability each team has of winning.

Totals

This is a bet on the total points, goals or runs scored in a game. You can also bet on the team totals and player totals. The sportsbooks set a total points line, and they issue odds on the total points going over and remaining under that line.

Point Spreads

The top online sportsbooks will give the moneyline favorite (the team they believe is strongest) a points handicap. You then bet on which team will cover the resulting point spread. For example, you could bet on the Brooklyn Nets -3.5 or the Boston Celtics +3.5.

Props

Proposition bets focus on the likelihood of a specific event happening within a game, such as a quarterback throwing over 297.5 yards, both teams scoring in a soccer match or a baseball player hitting a home run.

Parlays

Parlays allow you to combine two or more picks for a single bet. Each selection needs to win for the bet to pay off, but the profit compounds, so you can earn a large payout if you succeed.

Futures

A long-term bet on a future event, such as a team to win the Super Bowl, win its division or make the playoffs, or a player to win an individual award.

Legal Sports Betting History In The U.S.

A federal ban called PASPA prevented legal sports betting in most states until the Supreme Court overturned it in 2018. At that time, Nevada was the only state with legal sports wagering, as it had an exemption from PASPA.

New Jersey, which fought to bring about an end to the federal ban, swiftly launched a legal sports betting industry in 2018, along with Delaware, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. More than 30 states have now legalized sports betting, along with the District of Columbia, and legalization bills are underway in several other states.

  • You will receive online sports betting bonuses, including sign-up offers and additional promotions.
  • You can bet from anywhere in your state, at any time of day or night.
  • Choose from a variety of deposit and withdrawal options, and rack up loyalty points.
  • Pick from any of the best NFL betting sites, rather than just one if wagering on football.

Betting In-Person

  • You can only bet on the markets and sports available at the retail venue, and you cannot shop around for the best odds.
  • You are unlikely to receive bonuses, as the retail sportsbook already has a captive audience.
  • There can be a great deal of camaraderie, and you can watch sport on big screens in a pleasant setting.
  • You can only visit a retail sportsbook at certain times, and it can be expensive and time-consuming to travel to them.

Responsible Gambling

The best online sportsbooks have dedicated sections for responsible gambling. You will find advice on how to avoid problem gambling and how to spot the signs that you might be betting to excess. You should also be offered links to external organizations, such as charities and helplines, that can assist. The best online betting sites allow you to impose time limits, loss limits, deposit limits and bet limits on your account, while you can also take a cooling off period or self-exclude.
